A plane crash in Kazakhstan killed dozens of people but 25 survived, officials say

According to the Kazakh Ministry of Transport, a passenger plane operated by Kazakh airline Azerbaijan with dozens of people on board crashed in western Kazakhstan on Wednesday. It was flying from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya in Russia, when it crashed near the city of Aktau, the ministry said.

According to the Kazakh Emergencies Ministry, there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board the plane, and 25 people survived. Twenty-two were hospitalized, the ministry said.

Azerbaijan Airlines, the country’s national airline, said the Embraer 190 made an “emergency landing” about two miles from Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea.

An unconfirmed video of the crash showed the plane bursting into flames as it hit the ground, billowing thick black smoke. People stumbled out of an intact part of the fuselage, Reuters reported.

Russian news agencies said the plane was diverted due to fog in Grozny, Reuters added, noting that Russia’s aviation authority said initial information suggested a bird strike had caused the pilot to make an emergency landing.

Russian news agency Interfax reported that Kazakh authorities had begun investigating various possible causes for the crash, including a technical problem, according to Reuters.
