The last Mega Millions jackpot was won on September 10th when $810 million was won in Texas. Since then, the jackpot has continued to rise and become one of the largest ever.

According to the lottery, the jackpot just before Christmas Eve was $1 billion, or an estimated lump sum payout of $448.8 million after taxes. If won, it would have been the seventh largest jackpot in Mega Millions history.

How to play Mega Millions

To purchase a ticket, you’ll need to visit your local supermarket, gas station, or convenience store – and in a few states you can purchase tickets online.

To play you must select six numbers. Five numbers are white balls ranging from 1 to 70. The gold mega ball is a number between 1 and 25.

If you think the odds are stacked against you, ask for a “Quick Pick” or an “Easy Pick.” The computer then randomly generates the numbers for you.

Players can add the “Megaplier” for $1, which can increase non-top prize winnings by two, three, four or five times. The Megaplier is drawn on Tuesday and Friday before the Mega Millions numbers.
