In the tri-state area, some will have a white Christmas, others will barely make it.

In many places near the coast, the morning snowfall on Christmas Eve was almost 2.5 cm, in northwestern New Jersey up to the Catskills and the Hudson Valley the total snowfall was 5 to 7.5 cm.

But with afternoon temperatures above freezing in most areas, much of the snow melted and hopes of a white Christmas near the coast were dashed.

Here’s a look at the current snow depth shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service definition, a white Christmas is when there is at least an inch of snow on the ground by 7 a.m. on Christmas morning. This will definitely be the case in the higher elevations of New Jersey in the Poconos, Catskills and much of the Hudson Valley. But the closer you get to the coast, the less snow cover you get.

The weather on Christmas and the first night of Hanukkah will be nice and calm. Afternoon temperatures will be around 30°C under dry skies.

If you celebrate Hanukkah on Wednesday at sunset, the evening will be just as beautiful. Clear skies and a bearable winter cold.

Expect warmer temperatures and a higher chance of rain in the final days of 2024.

There will be several low pressure systems across the tri-state next week – one of which could bring light rain to the region’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

We’re still a week away, so the forecast will certainly change, but be prepared for at least a little rain as we count down to 2025!
