NFL Week 17 Optimal Flex Plays: Xavier Worthy’s increase in production comes at the right time

Well, here it is the people, the last one. What a season it has been and another year I have the honor of letting you read these FLEX game articles. Whether you’re playing in your league’s fantasy championship this weekend or not, always remember: IT’S ABOUT THE JOURNEY AND THE PROCESS, BABY. Ha… well, but the winning part is always good. It’s going to be a long but fun Week 17 with games on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. For 2024, we’re trying again with a few solid FLEX plays that I think could make the difference.

It was real, enjoy the holidays and thank you.

Xavier Worthy, WR, Chiefs at Steelers

This boy really comes at the right time, doesn’t he? Worthy became more involved in the Chiefs’ offense the further down the stretch they went. He has played at least 80% of the snaps in three straight games, something he has never done before in a game this season. Even more important are the chances he gets. He has caught at least five passes in four straight games and has scored 11 goals in each of the last two games. He’ll face a struggling Steelers secondary in Week 17 that just allowed Zay Flowers to finish as WR21 and Rashod Bateman to score a touchdown. Worthy is a player the Chiefs are actively trying to get the ball to, and he can be a fantasy savior on Christmas in Week 17.

Rashod Bateman, WR, Ravens at Texans

Bateman is having by far his best season (39-668-8) and has the utmost trust from Lamar Jackson. Since returning from his injury, he has now played two straight games in which he was on the field for at least 75% of the offensive snaps. The shocking thing is that he has only seen 11 goals in his last four games; The good thing is that he scored four touchdowns in the same period. Bateman was the Ravens’ big-play receiver this season, averaging 17.1 yards per reception. This game has an over/under of 46.5 and could quickly become a shootout involving quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and CJ Stroud. Bateman is a big play waiting to happen.

Gus Edwards, RB, Chargers at Patriots

I promise you I’m not chasing the points and rushing yards that Edwards had in Week 16 against the Broncos. I am fully aware that he gained 43 of his 68 yards on one run with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter. But did you see those two touchdowns from the 5-yard line and inside? You see what I’m getting at now, right? Edwards is no James Cook, who just started overrunning the Patriots defense last week (11-100-1). Edwards handled 68% of the Chargers’ running back contacts in Week 16 and should continue to do so for at least one more game until JK Dobbins returns. Ride the Gus bus if you need help.

Courtland Sutton, WR, Broncos at Bengals

It’s been a pair of losses for Sutton, as he’s just 8-82-1 on 15 goals in the last two games, good for just 36 WRs in that span, but he’ll have a good chance to come back this week to get up 17 against the Bengals. So far, the Bengals have the seventh-worst pass defense in the NFL. They were strong last week, but third-string quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson didn’t give them much resistance. This Week 17 game between the Bengals and Broncos currently has an over/under of 50 points, which is the second highest score of the week. Sutton is also 72 yards away from his second 1,000-yard season, so he’s motivated to get back on track.

Rachaad White, RB, Buccaneers vs. Panthers

White was in this column last week and showed a solid RB29 effort after converting 10 touches into 60 yards. It should be noted that the majority of his fantasy production came from catching 7 of 8 targets for 50 yards. White is still technically the “starter” while consistently playing 50% of the snaps (this has been the case the last two games) and now gets the Panthers’ defense allowing the most fantasy points per game to running backs . Carolina is about to let James Conner roll for 166 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. They have given up by far the most rushing yards to running backs this season (2,116), with the next team trailing by 358 yards. Both White and Bucky Irving will eat well in Week 17.

Darnell Mooney, WR, Falcons at Commanders

After a no-show game in Week 16 against the Raiders (1 target), Mooney got back on track last week against the Giants with a record of 6-82-0 on seven targets. With both he and Drake London within 45 yards or less of 1,000 yards, the Falcons will need everything from their top two receivers against the Commanders. This is a big game for both teams with a lot of playoff implications, and the high over/under ratio of 47.5 lets you know it could be a good game. When it comes to allowing fantasy points to receivers, the Commanders are a middle-of-the-pack defense, but they’re up for grabs. Mooney is a nice FLEX for your fantasy finale.
