Steelers news: George Pickens and DeShon Elliott officially return for Week 17

There are just under 90 minutes until kickoff of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 17 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and both teams have officially announced their gameday inactives.

Here’s a look at the Steelers who were inactive for their Week 17 showdown against the Chiefs.

Steelers inactive in Week 17

  • QB Justin Fields (3rd emergency QB)
  • CB Joey Porter Jr. (knee)
  • WR Ben Skowronek (hip)
  • LB Preston Smith
  • DE Dean Lowry

The Pittsburgh Steelers received good and bad news this week. As for the bad news, second-year starting cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is expected to miss his first career game in Week 17 after suffering a knee injury last week.

Fortunately, the team will see the return of several starters to the lineup in Week 17, including WR George Pickens (hamstring), DT Larry Ogunjobi (groin), S DeShon Elliott (hamstring) and CB Donte Jackson (back) – all four starters due missed at least one game due to their respective injuries.

The biggest surprises on the inactive list are the absences of DE Dean Lowry and LB Preston Smith. Smith was acquired just before the NFL trade deadline. Smith has one sack with the Steelers this year, including 11 total tackles (2 TFL). Smith played a season-low 13 snaps with Pittsburgh just last week.

Chiefs inactive week 17

  • OT DJ Humphries (thigh)
  • DB Chamarri Conner (concussion)
  • DT Chris Jones (calf)
  • EN Joshua Uche
  • OL CJ Hanson
  • OT Ethan Driskell
  • DE Malik Herring

Big news for the Steelers is the absence of 2x All-Pro DT Chris Jones. Jones did have a limited practice on Tuesday before Wednesday’s game, but the Chiefs ultimately decided to hold him back, with the short turnaround likely a factor.

Participation in this match was also notable for the questionable designation of RT Jawaan Taylor’s starting XI, who had been struggling with a knee injury all week despite being officially active. Watt should be able to give him some fits in Week 17, especially if he’s limited, as he’s already a penalty-prone player and has drawn the sixth-most penalties in the league this year – one fewer actually Joey Porter Jr.
