“3,402 people died on Zero Day,” Robert De Niro’s voiceover tells us at the start of the teaser Zero daya new limited series coming to Netflix. It’s a number large and similar enough to evoke thoughts of 9/11, as well as the images of chaos in New York City and Washington DC mixed in with De Niro’s speech. But what comes next is a nod to the biggest terrorist attack in America: Robert De Niro is about to reinvent the PATRIOT Act, folks.

Based on its teaser, Zero day It’s apparently about a cyber attack on the United States – bad enough to cause plane crashes and train derailments – and the lengths the government will go to give people the illusion of security. Series co-creator Noah Oppenheim narrated Netflixs Tudum“The show also looks at the cost of power for those who face these enormous challenges – what it means for them personally and what it means for their families.” Eric Newman, whose resume includes: Griselda And Narcoscreated the show together with Oppenheim.

The biggest draw here is, of course, De Niro, who Netflix says is his first time committing to a series. (He directed a Bernie Madoff TV movie for HBO in 2017 and appeared in an Argentine drama Nada (last year – perhaps this is just his first full-time lead role.) “Right now our actual world is scarier,” he said Tudumwhich sounds exactly like what he would say. But the show’s creators emphasize the contribution he made to the show, with Newman calling him a “partner” in the process. The rest of the cast is also pretty good: Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemmons and Matthew Modine round out the ensemble.

Zero day will be released on Netflix on February 20th. You can watch the first teaser below.
