Microsoft has deployed a fix to restore email and calendar services for thousands of users who reported outages, resulting in a “phased recovery” starting Monday evening – but exactly when the programs will come fully back online is still unclear.

More than 5,300 people had reported problems with Microsoft 365 on the Down Detector website as of 12 p.m. EST on Monday – although the number of reports fell below 500 as of 6 p.m. – with 85% of reports related to problems with Outlook, 9% were due to Exchange and 6% were due to issues with Microsoft 365. with SharePoint.

The company said most users had problems accessing Exchange Online – a cloud-based email server – and Microsoft Teams calendars.

Microsoft said it began rolling out a fix as of 9 a.m. – shortly after reports of problems increased significantly – that includes “manual restarts on a subset of machines that are in a failing state.” however, no estimated time to complete restoration.

The fix reached about 98% of customers late Monday morning, but the company later said on X that its efforts to restart machines were “progressing more slowly than expected for the majority of affected users.”

Around 6 p.m., Microsoft said its employees “continue to see gradual recovery for some users.”

The company added that a “recent change” was likely responsible for the outage and the change has been reverted.

While Microsoft didn’t specify which change affected programs, it also rolled out a new Recall AI tool for Windows Insiders on Monday morning that is designed to take regular snapshots of computer activity – essentially a “photographic memory” for computers – to view them on PCs and make them searchable later without having to remember exact keywords or dates.

The feature was first unveiled in May, but its initial version was criticized over privacy and security concerns, leading to the full release being postponed.
