Former OKC Thunder stars thrive in Christmas Day matchup

The Oklahoma City Thunder were suspended on Christmas Day this season despite meeting the requirements to make the roster. The Thunder sat courtside to look at this Christmas table littered with former OKC Thunder players.

One of the biggest such encounters was the showdown between former franchise cornerstones Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The Phoenix Suns earned a 110-100 victory over the Denver Nuggets, but all of the former OKC Thunder stars shined on that massive stage.

Durant posted 27 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks while shooting 9-for-26 from the floor, including 0-for-5 from long range.

Westbrook was one of the few Denver Nuggets players who made a positive contribution to the Nuggets’ efforts. The former MVP scored 17 points, two assists, six rebounds and a steal and was +3 in the game. The Nuggets’ sixth man played 27 minutes, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 1-for-4 from distance.

These two teamed up for many Christmas Day games in Oklahoma City, where they routinely celebrated the holiday in Bricktown with memorable victories and even a season opener thanks to a lockout season. Now the two faced each other on the league’s most important day of the calendar year.

This Nuggets loss drops Denver to 16-12, a full seven games behind the Thunder for the Northwest Division title, which Oklahoma City took home a year ago on a tiebreaker en route to the No. 1 seed. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
