Lakers big man Anthony Davis left the Christmas game with a left ankle sprain

Anthony Davis exits in the 1st quarter after playing only 7 minutes.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – LeBron James and the Lakers delivered once again as big man Anthony Davis went down.

Davis did not return for Los Angeles against Golden State on Wednesday night after spraining his left ankle midway through the first quarter.

“It’s always difficult to play without AD, so I think our task is even bigger, we have to do a little bit more,” James said afterwards The Lakers’ 115-113 win. “Everyone has to do their part, especially in defense, because AD is our anchor. I thought the guys did a great job of just playing off each other, getting where we wanted to go offensively and also being able to slow us down in time against a really good offensive team.”

Davis took an awkward step and rolled his ankle while moving through the paint toward the Lakers’ basket, leaving the game with 4:48 left in the quarter. He went to the locker room and was initially listed as questionable to return.

“I don’t have an update on AD,” coach JJ Redick said.

The 6-foot-2 Davis was already questionable as to whether he could play in the Christmas Day matchup against Stephen Curry and the Warriors due to a bruised left shoulder.

He missed all three of his field goal attempts for no points and grabbed two rebounds in seven minutes of play.

Austin Reaves helped increase the load on the boards by posting a triple-double of 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and scoring the game-winning layup with one second left.

“It came to a hand that we trust,” James said. “The piece was composed for me, they doubled me at the top of the key. It’s always great to have great options on the floor at the same time. AR has been in this position before.”
