Amazon Prime Video’s Premier League coverage ends this week – here’s why

Premier League fans can enjoy two days of Premier League action on Amazon Prime Video on December 26th and 27th, but these will be the last games to air on the streaming platform.

Amazon has had access to two full Premier League matchdays per season for the past six years, but the Christmas week games – with eight games on Boxing Day and two more tomorrow – will be the last of the broadcast deal with the Premier League.

What was unique was the Prime Video broadcast, which offered all ten games per match day exclusively live via the streaming platforms without interruptions.

However, the 20-games-per-season package was not offered by the Premier League when the new rights deals were auctioned last year. Therefore, from the 2025-2026 season, all Premier League teams will again be split between Sky Sports and TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport).

The Athletic published an article this morning saying that Amazon would have had to pay more than ten times the £30 million per season if it wanted to continue broadcasting Premier League games beyond this season.

“Amazon has chosen not to be involved,” the report said. “Their nice little 20-game package was no longer available when the Premier League ran its auction last year. The smallest package available, 56 games per season, was purchased by TNT. As expected, the other four packages went to Sky, the Premier League’s oldest ally.”

“A merger between the Premier League and Amazon should boost long-term competition and open the door for more streaming platforms to breathe new life into the market. Instead it goes back to the old guard of Sky and TNT, whose financial commitments are still unbeatable.”

For some football fans, availability via Amazon Prime was the only way to watch live Premier League games at home. Millions of households have a Prime subscription as part of their monthly/annual shopping planning, and that was a great bonus.

Amazon has also been very generous during this time with offering free trials to attract new memberships. That’s going away from today and you’ll need access to TNT or Sky to watch live Premier League football from next season.

However, 270 of the 380 games will be shown live. That’s a record.
