NFL playoff picture: Steelers fall in AFC standings after loss to Chiefs

After their third straight loss, a 29-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Steelers fell out of the running for good in the AFC playoffs.

Christmas Day was an important day for the AFC playoff picture. By defeating the Steelers, the Chiefs officially secured first place in the conference and secured Kansas City a bye into the first round of the playoffs.

The Steelers’ loss and Baltimore’s win over the Texans meant the Ravens overtook Pittsburgh in the AFC standings. The Ravens are now ranked No. 3, while the Steelers have fallen to No. 5. Houston remains at No. 4, having already won a weak AFC South despite its recent struggles.

The Steelers can still win the AFC North with a win next week and a Ravens loss. Regardless of how Pittsburgh finishes the regular season, a spot in the playoffs is guaranteed. At the beginning of the 18th week, all that matters is health, sowing and momentum.

The current AFC standings are listed below. Teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today are marked with an asterisk. Pittsburgh has already recorded wins against current Nos. 3, 6 and 7 this season. (Pittsburgh has now also lost to Nos. 1 and 3).
