Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola continues to seem disappointed and amused with his team There was a 1-1 draw against Everton on Boxing Day.

City have now won just one of their last 13 games in all competitions and had a great chance to get back to winning ways when Erling Haaland saved a second-half penalty.

Pep Guardiola’s reaction is extremely serious at the moment, as City have lost more ground not only in the title race (which they are no longer technically involved in), but more importantly in the fight for a place in the top four.

“We played really well but they are at the stage where it is happening. We create, we cash in the first time they arrive, but yeah, let’s move on,” a dejected Guardiola told Amazon Prime in the UK.

Asked if he saw any of the extra confidence he was hoping for from his team, Guardiola didn’t go that far, but did praise aspects of their performance.

“Yes we have to try, with results comes confidence because we always have it in our minds. The performance against this team was really cool. Defensive, offensive. We shoot a lot in the 18-yard area, but unfortunately we couldn’t get the result we wanted.”

When asked what he wanted from his team against Leicester on Sunday, Guardiola said it was all about mentality.

“It’s recovery, just three days, and we have to go there with the best possible mentality. That’s all we have to do,” Guardiola said.

Manuel Akanji was also asked by Amazon Prime in the UK whether a draw was a fair result.

“I don’t think so, no,” Akanji said. “I think we did a lot more as the game went on. We created a lot of chances. Unfortunately we only scored one goal and conceded one, basically out of nowhere. That’s football.”

Akanji lamented City’s inability to convert chances and couldn’t believe they almost conceded a goal in stoppage time after everyone had pushed forward.

“Today was a game in which we could score two, three, four goals, but it wouldn’t go in,” said Akanji. “I’m honest, it can’t happen that we almost lose the game in the last minute. We try to attack and then we lose the ball and it’s a six-on-two situation in front of our goal. Luckily I was able to block the shot. But we have to believe until the last moment that we can win the game, but that wasn’t possible today.”

He was also asked whether City can get back into the title race.

“The season is not over yet, but that (being in the title race) is not our goal at the moment,” Akanji said. “We have to focus on game by game and the next game is against Leicester. It won’t be easy for the shape we’re in. We have to concentrate fully, recover and give our best in this game.”

Akanji also revealed that this performance will give City some confidence heading into Sunday’s game at Leicester.

“We did a lot of things great. We defended well, we attacked well, we just didn’t manage to finish the actions. If we manage to finish it, I think we would have scored three or four goals,” Akanji added.
