ChatGPT is down – we know that

Topline

ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, experienced an outage on Thursday afternoon.

Important facts

After a spike in reports around 1:30 p.m. EST, more than 50,000 outages for ChatGPT were reported on Downdetector.com.

The outage appeared to continue beyond 3:30 p.m. EST, with 3,463 new outages reported.

A Forbes query to ChatGPT at 3:40 p.m. EST yielded no response from the chatbot, instead displaying an “Internal server error” message.

OpenAI said in an update posted at 4:05 p.m. EST that it is “continuing to work on a resolution to this issue” caused by an unnamed ISP.

Users on X, home of ChatGPT’s rival chatbot Grok, complained about the outage and joked that they were using their own brains again.

Thursday’s outage is ChatGPT’s second of the month, according to TechCrunch, noting that a roughly six-hour outage occurred two weeks ago.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

What you should pay attention to

Previous outages were resolved by OpenAI within hours of their onset. If the company sticks to its record of previous fixes, ChatGPT can be fixed before nightfall.

Big number

157 billion dollars. That’s how high OpenAI is valued after its $6.6 billion funding round in October.

Important background

In addition to several outages this month, ChatGPT also experienced technical difficulties in early June when it went down for a few hours. ChatGPT is widely considered to be the most popular chatbot in the artificial intelligence market. CEO Sam Altman said earlier this month that the AI assistant has more than 300 million weekly users who send over a billion messages to ChatGPT every day. The chatbot is free to use, but has some limitations for users who want to avoid paid tiers.
