According to a statement from the hospital, Singh was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Thursday evening after a “sudden loss of consciousness at home”.

“Immediate resuscitation measures were initiated at home. He was taken to the emergency medical department at 8:06 p.m. local time,” the hospital said, adding: “Despite all efforts, he could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m..”

Gursharan Kaur, his wife

Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur is 87 years old. She and Singh married in 1958 and had three daughters together.

Kaur is an Indian history professor and author, as well as a kirtan singer, a genre of devotional music.

Upinder Singh, his eldest daughter

According to her bio page on the university’s website, Upinder Singh is a 65-year-old history professor at Ashoka University in India. She previously taught at St. Stephen’s College and the University of Delhi.

She holds a Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy in History from the University of Delhi and a PhD from McGill University. In 2009 she was awarded the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities.

Upinder Singh has authored several books on ancient India, some of which focus on ancient culture, archeology and political violence. Her most recent book, Ancient India: culture of contradictions, was released in 2021.

According to a 2010 report, she has two children with husband Vijay Tankha Hindustan Times.

Daman Singh, his middle daughter

Daman Singh, 61, is a writer. In 2015 she published Strictly Personal: Manmohan and Gursharan, a memoir about her parents and family before her father became prime minister in 2004. She has written several other books.

She is married to Ashok Patnaik, a senior officer in the Indian Police Service. In 2016, he was named CEO of the National Intelligence Grid, a position he held until 2018.

Amrit Singh, his youngest daughter

Amrit Singh is a human rights lawyer and law professor at Stanford Law School. According to her LinkedIn profile, she received her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Cambridge, her Master of Philosophy in economics from the University of Oxford, and her law degree from Yale Law School.

Before coming to Stanford, Amrit Singh taught at other law schools, including Yale and New York University, and was director of the Accountability Division of the Open Society Justice Initiative. She previously worked as an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union for seven years.

She served as legal counsel for the Open Society Justice Initiative in a case seeking responsibility for the murder of a Saudi journalist in 2018 Washington Post Columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who succeeded Singh in 2014, wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday: “India mourns the loss of one of its most respected leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Coming from a humble background, he developed into a respected economist. He also held various government positions, including Finance Minister, leaving a strong mark. His interventions in Parliament over the years have also been revealing. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu wrote on X: “Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji was one of those rare politicians who moved in both academia and administration with equal ease. In his various roles in public office, he made significant contributions to the reform of the Indian economy. He will always be remembered. His death for the nation, his impeccable political life and his utmost humility are a great loss to all of us. My sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and admirers.

Rahul Gandhi, leader of India’s opposition Lok Sabha party, said in a statement published on X: “Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation. My deepest condolences go out to Ms. Kaur and the family.”

What happens next

Indian National Congress general secretary KC Venugopal posted on X that “all official programs of the Indian National Congress, including the Foundation Day celebrations, are canceled for the next seven days.”

The seven-day national mourning period includes the suspension of “all agitation and outreach programs. The party programs will resume on January 3, 2025. The party flag will be flown at half-mast during this mourning period,” Venugopal wrote.
