Governor Abbott mobilizes state resources as severe weather threatens East Texas

Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency resources as severe weather threatens across much of East Texas beginning Thursday.

“Texas stands ready to provide all necessary resources to assist local authorities in responding to severe weather threats,” said Governor Abbott. “As Texans and out-of-state visitors begin traveling after the Christmas holiday, it is critical that everyone regularly monitor road conditions, create an emergency plan and follow guidance from state and local officials. I thank all responders for their work this holiday week as they help their fellow Texans during these storms.”

The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for north, central, east and southeast Texas. Hazards expected over the weekend include large hail, damaging winds, possible tornadoes and heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding. Minor river flooding is also possible, with conditions improving early next week.

Additionally, the Governor has placed the following resources on standby:

  • Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service: Type 3 Urban Search and Rescue Teams (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2)
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force): Severe Weather Packages
