Liverpool came back from conceding an early goal to beat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield on Thursday and extend a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Struggling Leicester took a surprise sixth-minute lead through Jordan Ayew but had a charmed life until Cody Gakpo equalized just before half-time.

Liverpool then laid siege to Leicester straight from the break, needing just four minutes into the second half to take the lead through Curtis Jones before Mohamed Salah secured the points with a superb finish in the 82nd minute.

The victory extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the league to 13 games and moved Liverpool to 42 points at the top of the table.

They also have a game in hand against second-placed Chelsea (35) and third-placed Nottingham Forest (34).

On a foggy night in Liverpool, Leicester silenced the Anfield crowd with their early goal, as Stephy Mavididi’s run down the left culminated in a cross into the box that was met by Ayew, who used his power to beat the challenge of Andy Robertson fend off and then turn to the slot home.

Robertson almost made amends when his header hit the post in the 25th minute and a curling left-foot shot from Salah hit the crossbar in the 45th minute.

Seconds later, Gakpo came forward from the left and fired a great curling effort over Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk for a deserved equalizer.

Jones’ goal came after Liverpool moved the ball around in a tight area before the Englishman turned Alexis Mac Allister’s pass into the goal.

There was a long VAR review before the goal was confirmed and an equally long wait for a review when Gakpo found the net again in the 67th minute. This was ultimately ruled as offside.

Salah’s strike was another first-class finish as he marked his 100th Premier League home goal with a trademark cut inside from the right flank, followed by a deftly placed finish across the face of the goal.

Given their dominance, Liverpool could have won by a larger margin.

Leicester fell into the relegation zone before kick-off after Wolverhampton Wanderers moved above them following their 2-0 home win over Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Leicester remained on 14 points after their third league defeat in a row, two points above second-bottom Ipswich Town.

Liverpool host West Ham United next Sunday, while Leicester host champions Manchester City on the same day.
