It was the story of two seasons for the Wildcats, who looked like Big 12 contenders and potential College Playoff contenders with a 7-1 start before falling to a 1-3 finish that derailed all of their most ambitious plans . For the Scarlet Knights, it was essentially a book of three seasons during which they won their first four, lost their next four, and then somewhat saved things by winning three of their last four.

What Rutgers never did, however, was highlight the high-end potential that Kansas State showcased early on. The Wildcats earned two ranked wins before the end of September and then opened October by defeating Colorado and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. The Scarlet Knights lost to the only ranked opponent they played and were steamrolled by Wisconsin and USC, who combined for more losses than wins this season.

The question, of course, is whether this even matters, as every team is essentially starting a new chapter with this competition. Both will be without their top running backs, as Kansas State’s DJ Giddens and Rutgers’ Kyle Monangai have opted out of preparing for the NFL draft.

Considering what’s left, Kansas State has a stingier defense and a more explosive offense. The Wildcats will miss Giddens, of course, but quarterback Avery Johnson plays through the air and on the ground, and second-year running back Dylan Edwards, who transferred from Colorado, impressed in his limited opportunities.

Rutgers was better at controlling the ball, but if Kansas State limits its mistakes, it should control this contest.
