Two New Jersey faculty unions have both approved an anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) measure.

On Friday, the presidents of the Rutgers AAUP-AFT and the Adjunct Faculty Union released a joint statement after about 60 percent of their respective members voted to call for divestment from Israel.

The adopted resolution would explicitly distance itself from the “genocide in Palestine,” noting that Israel is “accused of apartheid, ethnic cleansing and dehumanization of Palestinians,” and that Israeli universities “play a key role in supporting Israel’s system of apartheid rule “.

The measure also calls on Rutgers and the Rutgers University Foundation to end their partnership with Tel Aviv University and “prohibit any future collaboration on Israeli military or intelligence technology.”

Faculty union members also voted to call on the institution to “conduct a comprehensive review of the university’s endowment to identify and approve investments in support of Israeli state and military operations, Israel’s settler colonialism, apartheid and genocide against the occupied Palestinian territories and the Palestinian people.” finish.” .”

The resolution also calls for the divestment of companies that promote “human rights violations in Palestine,” such as Amazon, Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Before the final vote, Rutgers’ JFAS (Jewish Faculty, Administrators, and Staff) released 15 reasons why the referendum should be rejected, stating that the document “is inconsistent with the goal of improving working conditions for Rutgers faculty and staff.” to improve; violates and undermines academic freedom; and discriminates based on nationality, ethnicity and religion.”

According to its website, the Rutgers AAUP-AFT is made up of over 5,000 members who are “committed to using our power as workers and union leaders to advance the cause of social justice, democracy and equality.”
