No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs secure berth in SEC Championship Game

A wild day in the SEC brought only one guarantee of the postseason: Georgia returning to the conference championship game for the fourth straight year.

The league confirmed Georgia’s spot in the title game Dec. 7 in Atlanta shortly after No. 15 Texas A&M’s 43-41 four-overtime loss at Auburn. The Aggies were one of three Top 15 SEC teams to lose on the road to unranked opponents on Saturday, as No. 7 Alabama fell 24-3 at Oklahoma and No. 9 Ole Miss fell 24-17 at Florida.

No. 10 Georgia will face the winner of the game between No. 3 Texas and Texas A&M next week in College Station. The Longhorns and Aggies haven’t met since 2011, when they were both members of the Big 12. Texas defeated visiting Kentucky 31-14 on Saturday and remains the only losing team in the SEC.

Georgia, which lost on the road to Alabama and Ole Miss but had wins over Texas and No. 11 Tennessee, beat UMass 59-21 on Saturday at Sanford Stadium.

The Crimson Tide had to start the day beating first Oklahoma and then Auburn. Additionally, No. 23 Missouri needed to win once in its last two league games to book its ticket to Atlanta. (Missouri defeated Mississippi State 39-20 on Saturday.)

Georgia lost to Alabama in the 2023 SEC title game, costing the Bulldogs a spot in the final four-team College Football Playoff.

When asked about Georgia’s path to the SEC title game after the UMass game, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart said he was only thinking about next week’s regular-season finale against visiting Georgia Tech.

Georgia won the SEC title game in 2017 and 2022 while losing in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
