Georgia pulls out an epic victory in an eight-overtime thriller and all but secures a berth in the College Football Playoff

It took Georgia more than 60 minutes to avoid being upset – and they also needed more than seven overtime periods.

Finally, when all was said and done, Georgia cruised to a 44-42 victory in eight overtimes over its in-state rival Georgia Tech.

It was the second-most overtimes in FBS history, one fewer than LSU and Penn State in 2021.

Georgia trailed 17-0 at halftime and was down by two touchdowns with just under five minutes left in regulation. But after scoring a touchdown, they recovered a fumble and then scored another touchdown to force overtime.

Nothing worked for either team as passes were incomplete and runs were stopped. The new overtime rules require teams to take turns attempting two-point attempts starting in the third overtime.

But finally, in the eighth overtime, Nate Frazier, after stopping the Yellow Jackets, ran into the end zone, completing the instant classic.

Georgia improved to 10-2 on the season; After already clinching a spot in the SEC title game last week, this win all but secured them a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Even a loss in this contest probably won’t be enough to knock out the Bulldogs.

It was also the 31st straight home win for Georgia, which hasn’t lost three games in a season since the 2018 season – although its third loss this year came in the Sugar Bowl. They haven’t lost three games before bowl games since 2016.

Head coaches Kirby Smart and Brent Key shared a long hug at the end of the game.
