The Houston Academy Raiders made history and secured their ticket to the AHSAA 3A State Championship with a 48:28 win

DOTHAN, Ala. – The Houston Academy Raiders are headed to the AHSAA state championship game for the first time since 1973 after a commanding 48-28 win over Southside Selma in the 3A South Semifinals.

The Raiders went into the game with an important question: Would star quarterback Kadyn Mitchell play after suffering a shoulder injury in the semifinals? The answer was a resounding yes. Mitchell immediately made his presence felt when he hit Riggs Hickey with a long touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. From that point on, the Raiders never looked back.

Defensive dominance early on

Houston Academy’s defense set the tone early, forcing a fumble and making multiple stops on fourth down to give the ball back to its red-hot offense. The Raiders’ defense also faced the daunting task of containing Southside Selma’s dynamic Auburn-committed receiving duo Derrick and Erick Smith. For much of the first half, Houston Academy was able to neutralize the Friars’ power, paving the way for their offense to capitalize.

Gabe Glover shines

As the game progressed, Gabe Glover made his presence known in spectacular fashion. Glover electrified the crowd with a kickoff return touchdown and followed that up with two long receiving touchdowns to score a first-half hat trick. His explosive plays gave the Raiders the cushion they needed before halftime.

Stay strong in the second half

Houston Academy led 38-22 at halftime and went tough defensively in the second half, allowing Southside Selma only one touchdown. The Raiders’ balanced attack and ability to control the pace of the game secured their historic victory, ending the evening with a 48-28 triumph.

Fight against Mars Hill for the title

The Raiders now turn their attention to the AHSAA 3A State Championship in Birmingham, where they will face the 13-1 Mars Hill Panthers. This marks the culmination of a remarkable season for Houston Academy as it looks to secure its first state championship and cement its place in school history.
