Strong to severe storms likely

Weather aware this evening – early Sunday: Strong to severe storms are expected across portions of central Alabama late this evening and into the early morning hours of Sunday. Damaging winds are the main threat, but a tornado and/or large hail are also possible.

Tonight: You have several options for 24-hour alerts tonight as strong to severe storms will move across the entire area from west to east. A line of storms will form, reaching west-central Alabama around 9:00 and 10:00 p.m., then quickly moving east and exiting our eastern counties around 4:00-5:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Damaging winds are the main threat, although a tornado or two are possible in addition to large hail. The highest tornado threat is over west-central Alabama, with a lower threat for areas along and east of I-65. Once the line leaves your area, the threat of severe weather is over.

Sunday: Our threat of severe storms ends early Sunday as rain and storms move to our east. A lingering shower is likely to occur primarily over eastern Alabama around sunrise, but clouds will quickly clear as sunshine returns in the late morning and afternoon. Temperatures will be quite mild in the lower to mid 60s, making for a very pleasant day.

Next week: Our next work week will be sunny and mild weather will continue into Tuesday with highs in the low to mid 60s, with Monday being the warmer day. Some clouds will pass through Monday night and early Tuesday, but no rain is expected.

A cooler air mass will arrive as the new year begins, with temperatures returning to the low 50s on New Year’s Day as dry weather continues through the end of next week. Overnight lows will be near freezing again Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning as cooler air continues to move in from the north.
