Sean Payton plays for OT as the Broncos lose 30-24 to the Bengals

CINCINNATI – Sean Payton was happy with the Broncos’ position at the moment and overall.

He liked the path to the finish line eight seconds before the end of regular time at Paycor Stadium.

Not just a win or a draw, but also a long-awaited spot in the postseason.

He liked the way his offense got going and the way his defense ran wild through Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in the first 59 minutes and 52 seconds.

However, instead of a win and a berth in the postseason, Payton’s chosen path ultimately led Denver to a second straight week of heartbreak.

The Broncos’ fate remains unclear after a 30-24 overtime loss to the Bengals that shifted what once looked like a glide path to the playoffs to the uncomfortably steep terrain of Week 18.

“We have to develop into winners and make sure we finish when we control the outcome of certain things,” lamented Denver right tackle Mike McGlinchey after his team fell to 9-7.

For the second straight year, Denver had a chance to do just that. A chance to finish and a chance to end the second-longest postseason drought in the NFL.

For the second week in a row, the team was so close that they almost reached Wild Card weekend.

They could have won with a two-pointer in the final seconds.

With a productive drive in overtime, they could have won.
