Barcelona – Las Palmas 1:2: Fabio Silva scores as the front runner on the 125th anniversary weekend

La Liga leaders Barcelona’s 125th anniversary celebrations were marred by a shock defeat to struggling Las Palmas.

The visitors took the lead when former Barca striker Sandro fired a low shot over the goal to boos and whistles from the home crowd.

Barca captain Raphinha equalized for the hosts with an unstoppable low shot into the net.

Wolves loanee Fabio Silva scored his fifth league goal of the season to restore Las Palmas’ lead. He shot into the bottom corner after receiving a great pass from Javi Munoz.

The result means Las Palmas rise to 14th place in the league. Real Madrid will cut Barcelona’s lead at the top to one point if it beats Getafe on Sunday (3:15pm GMT).

Barca celebrated their 125th anniversary on Friday and introduced a new mascot to mark the occasion, but the celebrations did not continue on the pitch as they lost at home to Los Amarillos for the first time since September 1971 – and they are now in three Leagues winless matches.

They suffered a setback when Alejandro Balde was taken off the pitch on a stretcher in the 26th minute after a collision with Sandro.

Hansi Flick’s side managed 26 shots in the game, their highest total in a league game this season, but did not do enough to trouble Las Palmas. They went close when Jasper Cillessen brilliantly pushed Raphinha’s free-kick over the bar, while Ferran Torres and Pablo Torre also failed.
