Barcelona suffered their first home defeat of the season Las Palmas stunned the Spanish league leaders 2-1 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Saturday.

Barcelona played excellently in the first three months under new coach Hansi Flick. Ahead of the visit to Las Palmas, Barça were riding high, having secured convincing victories over Real Madrid in La Liga and Bayern Munich in the Champions League, winning all eight home games at the start of the season.

But Flick’s team has now been without a win in three rounds of La Liga. Before the defeat against Las Palmas, Barça lost 1-0 at Real Sociedad and ended 2-2 at Celta Vigo.

In the last defeat, Sandro Ramírez and Wolves loanee Fábio Silva scored for the Canary Islands club as Raphina equalized.

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal returned as a half-time substitute after a three-week layoff with a right ankle injury, but Jasper Cillessen saved his best attempt. The Las Palmas goalkeeper also did well to fire Raphinha’s free kick over the crossbar in the final minutes.

The defeat also spoiled celebrations of Barcelona’s 125th anniversary and the introduction of the club’s new mascot, a large yellow cat called “Cat”. The name is a nod to Barcelona’s status as the leading club in Catalonia, with the four red stripes on Cat’s forehead referencing the Catalan flag.

First unveiled at an anniversary gala on Friday evening, Cat follows the club’s tradition of using historical landmarks to introduce a new mascot, with the short-lived “Clam” created to mark Barça’s 100th anniversary.

Barça’s big rivals Real Madrid, who have had their own problems, particularly in Europe, can now move ahead of Barcelona if the reigning La Liga champions win both games in a row.
