Several homes damaged, thousands without power in metro Atlanta after severe storms

A flood warning for Big Creek near Cumming is in effect through Sunday evening as NWS expects large portions of the Big Creek Greenway’s sidewalk and boardwalk to flood.

“The areas under Georgia 400 Highway and McFarland Road will be covered with approximately a foot of water,” NWS Peachtree City said. “A portion of the pavement under Majors Road will be covered with approximately two feet of water.”

More than 10,000 Georgia Power customers in the Atlanta area woke up Sunday morning without power. Georgia Power reported 330 outages in Fulton County affecting over 8,000 customers and 122 outages in DeKalb County affecting nearly 2,000 customers as of 10:30 a.m. Sunday. In Cobb County, Georgia Power reported 174 outages affecting over 2,000 customers.

As of Sunday afternoon, Georgia Power had restored power to about half of its customers in the Atlanta area.

Across metro Atlanta, downed trees and power lines blocked roads and damaged homes. Several homes went up in flames Sunday morning, but the Atlanta Fire Department is still working to determine the cause of the fires.

A fire broke out in a large residential building in Buckhead on Sunday morning and firefighters were called in When they arrived at 5:16 a.m., they discovered downed power lines near the home’s driveway, Atlanta Fire spokeswoman Anare Holmes said.

No one was in the residence, The building was located at 3635 Nancy Creek Road at the time of the fire, he said.

“The fire is under control and we are checking to see if it is burning or smoldering in the insulation,” Holmes said.

Atlanta Fire Rescue responded to another fire in southwest Atlanta around 10:30 a.m. that affected eight units at an apartment complex on Landrum Drive. Two people were taken to a hospital, one for burn injuries and one for smoke inhalation, Holmes said.

“Before the fire started, there was a power outage in one of the units,” he said, but added that a fire investigator was still working to determine the cause of the fire.

According to the City of Dunwoody, Chamblee Dunwoody Road is blocked between Valley View Road and Womack Road due to fallen trees leaning on power lines.

“Georgia Power has been notified, but we have been advised it will take some time for crews to respond,” the city of Dunwoody wrote on X. “Please avoid this area.”

Several homes in Cobb at Corral Drive and Bridal Path were also damaged by fallen trees, according to the NWS. The Cobb Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
