Former Foxes striker Matty Fryatt is skeptical about Ruud van Nistelrooy as Leicester City’s new manager, with the club yet to officially announce the appointment.

Speaking on the latest When You’re Smiling podcast, Fryatt said: “I didn’t expect this at the start of the season! “I’m not entirely sure about him as he’s unproven and where Leicester City are currently.”

“He was obviously a fantastic player. He always played at the top at Manchester United, Real Madrid and teams like that.”

“He was head coach at PSV, but in this league it’s usually a three-way battle, so it’s unusual to be at the wrong end of the table.”

“If you look at the other coaching candidates, especially Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, they never really made it at Premier League level.”

“But the Leicester City board could look at it and think in the same mindset as the path of Mikel Arteta, Enzo Maresca, Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick. You might hope there is something behind this path.”

“Of course he will get the respect for his playing career but as a manager I’m not sure because it’s something different.”

“The club acted quickly. Previously, in the relegation campaign, they were a little late with the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. I think that had to be changed before, so this time they acted quickly and obviously identified Van Nistelrooy as their man.”
