President-elect Donald Trump shared a surprisingly sentimental tribute to former President Jimmy Carter after he died Sunday at the age of 100, just two months after he mocked his predecessor at a campaign stop in Wisconsin.

Those of us who have been fortunate enough to have served as President know that this is a very exclusive club, and only we can understand the enormous responsibility of leading the greatest nation in history.

“The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a crucial time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude for that,” he continued.

“Melania and I are thinking warmly of the Carter family and their loved ones during this difficult time. We urge everyone to keep her in their hearts and prayers.”

He later added in a second post: “President Jimmy Carter is dead at 100.” Although I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved our country and everything it stood for and respected.”

“He has worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect,” Trump added. “He was a really good man and we will obviously miss him very much. Even after leaving the Oval Office, he was far more consequential than most presidents. Heartfelt condolences from Melania and me to his wonderful family!”

Carter’s son Chip confirmed this Atlanta Journal Constitution that his father died at 3:45 p.m. at his home in Plains, Georgia, after being admitted to hospice care in February 2023.

President Joe Biden also penned a tribute to Carter on Sunday and posted an old photo of the two X.

“For six decades, Jill and I had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend,” Biden said. “But the extraordinary thing about Jimmy Carter is that millions of people across America and around the world who never met him also considered him a dear friend.”

The president went on to describe Carter as “a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism” and offered his condolences to Carter’s family.

Unlike Biden, Trump’s stance on Carter has been notoriously inconsistent with the president-elect just two months ago he was mocking him on his 100th birthday in October while campaigning in Waunakee, Wisconsin.

At the time, Trump called Biden the “worst” president in U.S. history and said, “Jimmy Carter is the luckiest man because Jimmy Carter is considered a brilliant president in comparison.”

The president-elect also criticized Carter in 2019 after the commander-in-chief claimed during a Carter Center event in Leesburg, Virginia, that Russian interference had won Trump the presidency in 2016.

“There is no doubt that the Russians interfered in the election,” Carter said said at the time. “And I think that the interference, even if it hasn’t been quantified yet, if fully investigated would show that Trump didn’t actually win the 2016 election. He lost the election and was put into office because the Russians intervened on his behalf.”

In response, Trump called Carter a “nice man” but a “terrible president.”

“He was destroyed within his own party,” Trump said at a press conference in June 2019 after the conclusion of the G-20 summit in Japan. “He was devastated,” he continued, before dismissing Carter’s claims and calling him a “forgotten president.” Politically.

Carter’s criticism of Trump continued during his first re-election campaign, in which he said it would be a “disaster” if Trump were re-elected to a second term.

“I think it will be a disaster to have four more years of Trump,” Carter said said during a town hall event at the Carter Center in Atlanta on September 17, 2019. “You know, if I was just 80 years old, if I was 15 years younger, I don’t think I could take on the responsibilities that I’ve experienced than I did President,” he continued, while expressing concern about Trump’s age.

Although the couple has publicly argued back and forth, their relationship hasn’t always been necessarily sour and they even shared a polite moment during a crucial phone conversation in 2019. In April of that year, Trump called the late president for the first time to discuss the relationship US on China after receiving a letter from Carter advising on the matter.

“President Jimmy Carter wrote a beautiful letter to President Trump about the current negotiations with China,” the White House said in a statement confirmed at the time. “They had a very good telephone conversation about President Trump’s stance on trade with China and numerous other issues.”

Melania Trump also attended the memorial service for Carter’s wife Rosalynn in Georgia following her death in 2023, joining other former first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.

Before his death on Sunday, Carter made clear his support for Trump’s 2024 opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, and repeatedly reiterated that he intended to vote for her throughout her campaign.

“It’s plugged in,” Chip said The Associated Press in October. “I asked him two months ago if he would try to live to 100 and he said, ‘No, I’m trying to live to vote for Kamala Harris.'”
