Legendary coach Nick Saban highlights potential problems with the new College Football Playoff format

During his storied coaching career, Nick Saban rarely shied away from the opportunity to share his thoughts on a college football-related topic.

During his recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the seven-time national champion coach discussed some of the potential drawbacks of the new 12-team College Football Playoff format.

As part of the expanded playoffs, the top five ranked conference champions automatically receive a postseason bid. The four highest-ranked conference champions receive a first-round bye. Saban suggested the concept could have some unintended consequences.

“By giving the conference champions the bye if they’re not one of the top-ranked teams … what it really affects is the path to the championship,” he argued.

“And if you don’t seed teams based on the quality of overall season performance,” he continued. “The number one seed should technically have the easiest path to the championship, and that doesn’t really happen when you allow conference champions to be seeded in the top four when they’re not top four teams.”

Last week’s college football games featured several surprises. Alabama lost to Oklahoma, Florida upset Ole Miss and Auburn defeated Texas A&M. Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas A&M all enter the final week of the regular season with three losses.

Saban argued, however, that teams with three losses would be rewarded by making the playoffs.

“If we boil it down, I think it’s difficult to reward a team with three losses,” Saban said. “Especially the type of losses that Ole Miss had and as did Alabama against pretty much .500 teams that I would like to name. Pretty average teams. There are some other teams that may not have competed in the same competition, but they have “I don’t lose games against average teams either.”

From Saban’s perspective, the only potential three-loss team that should be seriously considered for the playoffs is the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia will enter the annual Georgia Tech-Georgia Tech showdown on November 29th with two losses.

The Bulldogs are then scheduled to play in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta against the winner of this weekend’s Texas-Texas A&M game. If Georgia loses this game, Saban doesn’t believe they should be eliminated from playoff contention.

“If Georgia actually plays in the SEC championship game, it really shouldn’t be penalized if it loses the game,” Saban said. “They would end up with three defeats. I don’t think a team that hasn’t played in the championship game with two losses should be there, especially if they played a good game and it wasn’t a bust.”

Oregon remained atop the current playoff rankings, with Ohio State, Texas, Penn State and Notre Dame rounding out the top five.
