Australian star Steve Smith is back in the running and could reach 10,000 runs in the final Test at home at the SCG.

But his biggest concern on day five was the safety of young batsman Sam Konstas, who caused chaos while fielding and talking on the batting pitch.

“I mean, he’s crazy. He enjoyed it under the covers,” Smith told Seven after the game.

“At one point I thought Jaiswal was trying to silence him with the ball.

“He brought great energy and a lot of self-confidence. Good to see he’s off to a good start. He has a bright future.”

Smith is still around 38 runs away from 10,000 runs and will therefore have a chance to reach the milestone in the final Test at the SCG, which begins on January 3.

“We’ll see. It would be nice,” Smith told Seven.

“I don’t play for things like that, but 10,000 would be a great milestone to tick off. Join you and some others, that would be cool.”

Smith said the SCG conditions are still somewhat unknown at the moment so they will have to figure things out in the coming days.

“It was a huge game for us. We played really well. Nice to have the result at the end,” Smith told Seven.

“Sydney, we’ll see what Sydney thinks. That wicket there, we don’t know what it’s going to do. Wait and see when we get there and adjust accordingly.

“A wonderful series so far. Sydney will also be a hit, I dare say.”
