New Year’s Eve: Is December 31, 2024 a public holiday?

In some states, banks will remain closed on December 31, 2024, while in other states it will be a normal business day. Apart from national holidays, public holidays in India vary from state to state. Additionally, all regular and non-scheduled banks generally observe a holiday on the second and fourth Saturdays.

Holiday on December 31st (Tuesday)

On the occasion of New Year/Lossong/Namsoong, banks will remain closed in Mizoram and Sikkim on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.

Although banks are closed on certain days, net banking, mobile banking and UPI continue to function. However, sometimes there may be problems dispensing cash at ATMs when banks have a long holiday.

Most banking transactions can be done online through net banking and mobile banking. However, one should ensure that these banking services are activated and a phone number is linked to the bank account to receive the OTP to initiate the transaction.

During December, banks will be closed on the occasion of the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma, Death Anniversary of U SoSo Tham, Goa Liberation Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Feast, Christmas Celebration, U Kiang Nangbah and New Year’s Eve / Lossong/Namsoong varies and depends on the state being searched for.

In India, the second and fourth Saturday of every month are government and national holidays, so banks are closed on these days. If a month has five Saturdays, the bank is open on the fifth Saturday of that month.

Some national holidays in the year are Republic Day on January 26th and Independence Day on August 15th and October 2nd (Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti). These are the days when banks will remain closed in all states.
