Georgia’s instant classic win over Georgia Tech

Georgia’s instant classic win over Georgia Tech

We unpack everything good, bad and worse from the Bulldogs’ historic win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

The Georgia Bulldogs emerged victorious over their in-state rivals, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, in a top-notch eight-overtime series. The Bulldogs overcame deficits of 17 and 14 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime, which would result in the longest-played football game involving an SEC team. With four quarters and eight extended recaps, here’s this week’s edition of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

It feels good to emerge victorious in an instant classic, but doing it against your in-state rival on your home field makes the win all the more fun. It certainly wasn’t pretty and frankly, the Dawgs shouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place. But Friday night’s win will go down as one of the great games in the Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. Rivalry.

Although the Bulldogs are known for their steadfast defense, Friday night’s performance was not up to standard. The Yellow Jakets gained over 550 yards on offense, with quarterback Haynes King rushing for over 100 yards on the ground. Tech also converted nearly half of their 3rd down conversions, which extended drives and prevented the Dawgs’ offense from ever getting going.

The Bulldogs entered this game as three-point favorites and were heavy favorites to win in their home environment. However, similar to other games this season, the Dawgs quickly found themselves in a deep hole from which they were almost unable to get out. Whether it was poor tackling, dropped passes, poor third-period execution, or something else or a mishap, the Dawgs were far from their best on Saturday night. And they have to give their best from now on to have a chance of winning the national title.
