Brock Purdy leaves MNF game with a burning arm due to injury concerns

There could be another stardown for the 49ers this season.

Quarterback Brock Purdy will undergo testing Tuesday after sitting out the 49ers’ 40-34 loss to the Lions on “Monday Night Football” after sustaining a right elbow injury late in the fourth quarter.

“I got hit in the butt and basically just my arm burned,” Purdy said after the game, according to ESPN. “I tried to throw a couple on the sideline, but I couldn’t do it at that point.”

The third-year quarterback, who is about two years removed from a torn UCL suffered in San Francisco’s NFC Championship loss to Philadelphia, allayed fears that it could be a similar injury.

“We did some testing with UCL stuff and I’m good at that,” said Purdy, who went 27 of 35 for 377 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

“But we’ll just have to take pictures of it tomorrow and see the whole thing.”

Purdy, 25, was also sacked twice in Monday’s loss. With less than two minutes left in the second half, he was tripped by Lions safety Brian Branch before making his way to the sideline.

Backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs replaced Purdy in the final moments of the game.

The medical staff told head coach Kyle Shanahan that they believe Purdy’s injury was related to “some nerve issues.”

“I know that when everyone hears about Brock’s elbow and stuff, they think about the elbow injury a few years ago, just like I did,” Shanahan said, according to ESPN.

“But when I just spoke to the doctors, he was hit in exactly the right place. When you get hit there, you lose your nerve and don’t feel much, but hopefully everything will be okay.”

Purdy’s status for Sunday’s meaningless regular-season finale against the Cardinals is unclear.

It was an injury-plagued series for the 49ers, who reached the 2024 Super Bowl in February before losing to the Chiefs in overtime.

Aside from Purdy, who also missed a game in November with a shoulder injury, San Francisco played much of the season without star running back Christian McCaffrey.

The reigning Offensive Player of the Year struggled with calf problems in preseason and was later placed on the injured list in September with Achilles tendonitis.

McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve again this month after suffering a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in a loss to the Bills in Week 13.

The 49ers also lost wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for a year after he suffered a torn ACL and ACL in October.

San Francisco is 6-10 heading into its final game of the season.
