Eminem’s 2024 album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” sparked debates, set milestones, and landed him on Spin’s list of the year’s biggest comebacks.

Spin Magazine just released its list of the biggest comebacks of 2024, and while Eminem fans could safely claim that he never left, the world seems to disagree. Coming in second on the list, just behind names like Linkin Park and ahead of LL Cool J, Eminem seemingly impressed the magazine team with his summer release “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).” Spin noted:

“Is it a comeback just because you were away for a while and then put out an excellent, sharp-tongued album, with all the force of your previous work and the usual dynamite load of controversy? Do you have to want to come back, at least show some enthusiasm about it? And what if your comeback is quixotically all about retiring?

“The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)” went straight to number one on the charts upon its release this summer, his eleventh number one album. So the fans liked it and wanted it. But most critics hated it. They may or may not have liked the music, they didn’t really say that, but they hated the feelings! They were shocked, shocked that the artist formerly known as Slim Shady wasn’t impressed with Generation Z and didn’t engage in designer pronouns.”

Well, they’re right in the sense that Eminem hasn’t gone anywhere before. But with “The Death of Slim Shady” Marshall apparently received more attention this year than before. For example, fans catapulted “Houdini” to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 – Eminem’s best solo chart position since 2002’s “Without Me.” In fact, that was the same year, 2002, that Spin published Eminem’s cover story.

While Spin calls it a comeback, Eminem’s approach feels more like a mic drop. Whether the world sees it as a return or a swansong (we don’t!), no one can deny that 2024 was Eminem’s year.
