The Michigan Wolverines shocked the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, defeating their rival 13-10 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

Although Michigan entered the game just 6-5 this season, head coach Sherrone Moore shut down OSU’s potent offense and handed the Buckeyes their second loss of the season.

Michigan mounted an 11-play, 57-yard scoring drive that lasted 5:28 seconds and put the Wolverines on top with a 21-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada with 45 seconds left.

A 27-yard run by Michigan running back Kalel Mullings was the highlight of the game as it helped put the Wolverines within field goal range:

The Michigan defense stepped up again on the ensuing attack, forcing a turnover on downs to preserve the upset.

With the victory, the Wolverines have now won four consecutive seasons in the historic rivalry known as “The Game,” marking their longest winning streak since beating Ohio State four times in a row from 1988 to 1991.

Given OSU’s offensive struggles on Saturday, head coach Ryan Day and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly received widespread criticism on social media:

Aaron Torres @Aaron_Torres

Ryan Day is on the verge of being fired because he and Chip Kelly would rather try to prove they’re tougher than Michigan in the trenches than just throw to one of his 237 NFL wide receivers
What a world.

Ohio State tried to establish the run throughout the game, to no avail as the team only rushed for 77 yards. Quarterback Will Howard had issues of his own, going 19 of 33 for 175 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Overall, the Wolverines held Ohio State to 252 total yards and managed to win the game despite quarterback Davis Warren going just 9 of 16 for 62 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

With Saturday’s loss, the Buckeyes are likely eliminated from the Big Ten Championship Game. Undefeated Oregon has already secured a spot in the game, meaning a win by Penn State or Indiana on Saturday will eliminate OSU.

Although Ohio State doesn’t have a guaranteed spot in the College Football Playoff after its second loss of the season, it’s a little difficult to see the Buckeyes moving out of the top 12 from No. 2 in the CFP standings.

However, even if the Buckeyes are part of the 12-team CFP field, many on social media expressed their belief that they are a fraud incapable of competing for a national championship:

After perhaps the most embarrassing loss of the Ryan Day era, Ohio State must now wait and hope that it is granted a spot in the College Football Playoff and a chance to play for the national title.

Even if that happens, the Buckeyes will have a difficult road ahead as their chance at a first-round bye is now gone.

As for the Wolverines, they’ve struggled through a tough season after going undefeated and winning it all last season, but they gave head coach Sherrone Moore his debut win on Saturday.

Although Michigan won’t play in a major bowl due to a 7-5 record, the win over Ohio State was still a rewarding season for the program and represents a big building block for the Wolverines heading into next season.
