The Cincinnati Bengals announced Friday that rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton will not travel with the team for their Week 18 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He has already been ruled out due to a coaching decision, but the Bengals did not immediately disclose the reason for his removal.

Internet sleuths have revealed that although the third-round rookie is suspended by the Bengals, he is also facing expulsion and a lawsuit from his landlord. Not only was Burton left at home, but his home doesn’t want him there. That’s a tough pill to swallow for Burton, who had an incredibly difficult start to his NFL career.

According to Hamilton County Clerk of Courts records, Radius Acquisition LLC filed eviction proceedings against Burton “and all occupants” of his residence on Dec. 23. They are also seeking $2,506.33 from him. A court date is scheduled for January 24 to resolve the matter.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Radius Acquisition was seeking $10,000 “to compensate the plaintiff for damage to the premises in excess of fair wear and tear.”

Sounds like he could have destroyed the apartment where the Bengals housed all of their rookies when they were drafted – but that’s just a theory. It remains unclear whether the Bengals’ eviction, lawsuit and suspension are related.

In November, Burton went viral when a photo surfaced of him in a casino after being benched for missing a team walkthrough. In his defense, it’s easy to get caught up in Las Vegas as a 23-year-old.

The Bengals selected Burton in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, making him the 80th player selected overall.

But the selection was not without numerous warning signs. After moving from Georgia to Alabama, the Crimson Tide were upset by Tennessee in 2022. At the end of the game, Volunteers fans stormed the field and Burton hit a cheering woman in the head.

Given the uncertainty surrounding star receiver Tee Higgins’ future in Cincinnati, the Bengals were likely hoping that Burton would be a younger, cheaper and more viable replacement given his upside.

That didn’t work out, as he only had four balls for 107 yards in his rookie season. He’s caused more headaches than passes caught so far, and that’s usually not a recipe for a successful NFL career.
