Sonny Smart, a football coach at two Georgia high schools and father of Georgia football coach Kirby Smart, died early Saturday, the university said.

Sonny Smart was head coach at Bainbridge from 1988 to 1994, when Kirby played for him, and was Rabun County coach from 1995 to 2003.

Sonny Smart died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday.

He was taken to a New Orleans hospital after he fell while walking in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve and broke his hip, UGA said. He was in town before Georgia’s Sugar Bowl game against Notre Dame.

Complications occurred after hip surgery.
