Kentucky vs Florida – UK Athletics

As Kentucky prepares to open Southeastern Conference play, the Cats face perhaps an unprecedented gauntlet. The SEC is by far the toughest league in the country so far this season. Consider the following:

The conference has the top two teams in the NET rankings (Auburn, Tennessee);
The SEC has three of the top four teams in the NET (Florida);
The league has four of the top 10 (Alabama);
The SEC has seven of the top 20 (Kentucky, Mississippi State, Texas A&M);
And eight of the top 30 (Georgia);
The SEC has 12 of the top 40 (Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Texas);
The league has 14 in the top 50, 15 in the top 53. Only South Carolina is further down the list with 85.

On Thursday, UK head coach Mark Pope talked about how tough the conference is this season.

“This league is incredibly, incredibly special,” Pope said. “This is where you want to be. If you can’t play in the SEC this year, I’m playing poorly for you. The best teams and the best players are there, so let’s go.”

Pope knows his Cats will face a lot of ups and downs in conference play because every game will be difficult.

“We’re all going to have emotions,” Pope said. “We’re going to feel like the greatest team ever, we’re going to feel like the worst team ever. It’s just the nature of the deal. The trick is how quickly we can become constructive again during these emotional fluctuations. Our guys are pretty good at turning frustration into a fight.”

What is the most important thing Pope wants his team to focus on at Kentucky?

“We can freshen up whether it’s a win or a loss if we come here every day and focus on getting better,” Pope said. “That’s the DNA of a team that has a chance to be great when it matters most.”

The SEC battle begins Saturday when Kentucky hosts No. 6 Florida at Rupp Arena. The Gators are 13-0 this season and have impressed Pope on both ends.

“Halfcourt defense, they’re in the top percentile, they’re one of the best teams in the country defensively, they’re the second-best team in the country, they’ve got three experienced guards that just score in bunches,” Pope said. “Their bigs are insatiable, they are relentless and skilled and can shoot anything. It’s another top 10 fight. It will be a great test for us to see where we are now and what lessons we have learned from it.”

The competition for SEC basketball in 2025 begins for both teams at 11 a.m. Saturday (ESPN).
