The motorcade will travel through the state, with rolling road closures impacting traffic on major highways and streets.

ATLANTA – Georgia will honor the life of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, with a state funeral today, Jan. 4. The ceremony begins in Americus with a family convoy leaving Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

The motorcade will pass through several cities before reaching Atlanta, impacting traffic across the state. Motorists are urged to be aware of rolling road closures along key routes. Below is what we know so far about road impacts and timeline details.

Road closures and traffic disruptions

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has issued a statewide warning of temporary rolling closures in the following areas:

  • Surface Roads in Sumter County
  • I-75 N in Byron
  • I-475
  • I-75 N towards Atlanta

The entrance to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center on Highway 280 will be closed from 8 a.m. to noon. Public viewing is permitted along the motorcade route, with designated parking at the pecan grove to the east. The Georgia State Patrol will close Highway 280 near the area at 9 a.m. Visitors are therefore advised to arrive early.

As the motorcade travels through Preston, Ellaville, Butler, Reynolds and Fort Valley, it slows down for public tributes. Officials expect significant traffic disruptions near Atlanta’s Carter Center, where East John Lewis Freedom Parkway NE will remain closed until noon on Jan. 7.

4:10 p.m. | Jimmy Carter’s grandson Jason Carter delivers emotional remarks at the service at the Carter Center.

4:08 p.m. | Watch Jimmy Carter’s casket being carried into the Carter Center.

4:03 p.m. | The Honor Guard salutes former President Jimmy Carter.

4:00 p.m. | Jimmy Carter’s casket was carried to his resting place at the Carter Presidential Center to the sound of trumpets playing “America the Beautiful” and other songs. Carter Center service will begin soon.

3:50 p.m. | Before Jimmy Carter arrived at the Carter Center around 4 p.m., which was originally scheduled for 3:45 p.m., an Emory professor joked, “Jimmy would probably be mad if he was late.”

1:15am | MARTA has updated its guidelines for President Carter’s viewing, which begins at 6 p.m

  • People MUST take a bus shuttle from King Memorial to the Carter Center unless they plan to walk or bike there.
  • There is NO public parking at King Memorial Station or the Carter Center.
  • NO bags or umbrellas are permitted in the Carter Center. (Prohibited items will be dropped off at the Carter Center and will not be returned.)

11am | The Carter family and the motorcade stopped in front of the family farm and the National Park Service to salute and ring the farm bell 39 times (since Carter was the 39th president).

10:30 a.m. | The Carter family arrived at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center ahead of the state funeral.

  • Tribute at Carter’s Boyhood Farm: At 10:50 a.mBeginning in 2019, the motorcade will stop at the Carter family farm in Plains, where the National Park Service will ring a historic bell 39 times in honor of the 39th president.

  • Secret service pallbearers: Nine current and former Secret Service agents will serve as pallbearers and walk alongside the hearse as a symbolic final protective unit.
