Shogun’s Tadanobu Asano Wins Golden Globe for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

On Sunday night, Tadanobu Asano received the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for his portrayal of Kashigi Yabushige on FX and Hulu’s Shogun.

During his acceptance speech, Asano humbly introduced himself to those in attendance and viewers at home, saying, “Maybe you don’t know me. I am an actor from Japan and my name is Tadanobu Asano. Wow!”

It was obvious that he did not expect to take top honors in the same category as Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez), Harrison Ford (Shrinkage)Jack Lowden (Slow horses), Diego Luna (La Máquina) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The bear).

He revealed that he attended the awards ceremony during a short break from filming and would return to the set tomorrow, but the project was not announced. A second season of Shogun was confirmed last year and is expected to begin filming in 2025. However, Asano will not be returning as his character died in Season 1.

“This is a very big gift for me,” he said excitedly to the crowd that matched his high energy.

Asano’s celebration follows the historical drama’s lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada’s win for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series. The show also won Emmy Awards in September in 18 categories, including Outstanding Drama Series. Asano received his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
