The Andrew Gillam murder case remains unsolved two years later

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Saturday marked a somber two-year anniversary. On January 4, 2023, Andrew Gilliam was shot and killed in his sleep in his Huntsville apartment. Two years later, the murder remains unsolved.

For the first time since the murder, Andrew’s father Jeff Gilliam speaks out. He breaks his silence and hopes someone will come forward with information about his son’s murderer.

“He had space fever and that was his dream,” Jeff Gilliam said.

At just 27 years old, Andrew Gilliam had already achieved his childhood dream of becoming a rocket engineer. Gilliam supported projects at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and even helped launch the Artemis I in 2022.

But on January 4, 2023, his life ended tragically. At 3 a.m. shots were fired at the Sunlake at Edgewater Apartments.

Several bullets hit the building, one of which went through Gilliam’s window and entered his bedroom. Gilliam was hit by the bullet and later died in hospital.

“It’s hard to believe that two years have passed, but of course for us and every parent who has lost a child, it feels like it was yesterday,” said Jeff Gilliam.

So far there have been no arrests in this case. Police believe Gilliam was not the target of this attack.

His father said on this anniversary the family is hoping for answers.

“It won’t satisfy everything, but it will add closure,” Jeff Gilliam said. “Our fear is that this person will do this to another family.”

Andrew’s uncle Vic Hartman told WAFF 48 News there is something the public can do to help.

“If someone in your audience knows something about this random act of violence and could provide information that would lead to the arrest of Andrew’s killer, they could raise $23,000,” Hartman said.

Now all the family can do is wait and hope someone comes forward with information.

Jeff Gilliam said there is something that provides comfort in this time of grief.

“We know where he stands, we know that he accepted Jesus as his Savior when he was younger. It is a comfort through the sadness and heartache to know where he stands and to know that one day we will be with him,” said Jeff Gilliam.

If you have any information about this case, please contact Crime Stoppers or the Huntsville Police Department.

A spokesman for the Huntsville Police Department said they have followed up on numerous leads but need public assistance in this case.

You will continue to develop new leads as new information comes in.
