Imagine saying that on November 24, 2011. That was the last time the Longhorns and Aggies met on the football field – a game that Texas won 27-2 the season before Texas A&M left for the SEC. 25 won.

Now these teams are an important piece in the puzzle of the SEC Championship Game in Rivalry Week. No. 6 Georgia — which has appeared in the SEC championship game in six of the last seven seasons — has secured a spot in the conference championship game.

Texas (10-1, 6-1 SEC)

– If Texas loses, they will be eliminated from the SEC Championship Game as their cumulative winning percentage in the conference will be lower than Texas A&M’s.

Georgia (9-2, 6-2 SEC)

– The Bulldogs secured a spot in the SEC Championship Game with a conference record of 6-2. They will play the winner of the Texas-Texas A&M matchup.

– If Texas wins, the Bulldogs are No. 2.

– If Texas A&M wins, Georgia will likely be the No. 2 seed, as the Aggies will likely have a higher overall conference win rate among their SEC opponents.

Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2 SEC)

– The Aggies secure a spot in the SEC Championship game with a win against Texas.

– If Texas A&M wins, it will face Georgia in the SEC championship game. The Aggies will likely have a higher cumulative conference win rate among their SEC opponents, giving them the No. 1 seed.

– If Texas A&M loses, they will fail to reach the SEC Championship Game and will likely be eliminated from the College Football Playoff as it would be their fourth loss of the season.

What about No. 7 Tennessee? The Volunteers are 9-2 with a 5-2 record in SEC play and could finish at 5-2 with a win over Vanderbilt. But the Vols lost to Georgia. If Texas A&M beats Texas, the Aggies would have a win against the highest opponent in the SEC standings – the third tiebreaker. Tennessee can still make the College Football Playoff, but cannot play in the SEC Championship Game.

Who will play in the SEC Championship Game?

We predicted Texas would win 29-22 against Texas A&M in Rivalry Week, which would put the Longhorns in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia. The Bulldogs defeated the Longhorns 30-16 on October 19th.

One possible chaos scenario involves a Texas A&M win coupled with a Georgia loss to Georgia Tech on Black Friday. That would mean the SEC Championship would be between two teams with three losses this season.

The SEC Championship Game begins at 4:00 p.m. ET on December 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The game will be televised on ABC.
