Over 400 emergency responders are mobilized as Baltimore grapples with a winter storm and major roads are a top priority

Due to severe winter weather conditions, Mayor Brandon M. Scott issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Baltimore City.

The state of emergency was declared on Sunday at 11 p.m. and is valid for 48 hours.

“The Executive Order mobilizes the City of Baltimore’s Emergency Operations Plan to deploy emergency resources and activates additional resources necessary to address the emergency situation,” said a press release from the mayor’s office.

Speaking to FOX45, Mayor Scott said over 400 teams were working around the clock to keep the community safe and urged residents not to leave home.

“We just want people to understand that we will do everything we can. But right now it’s going to be tough, and if you don’t need to be outside, then don’t stay out,” said Mayor Scott.

Mayor Scott said emergency operations officials are currently focusing on clearing the main roads first, but assured that his team will work on the secondary roads once the main roads are cleared.

“Of course we will initially concentrate on the main streets. Especially now when things are so bad outside. This will take some time. But when the snow subsides and we make sure the main roads are ready, we will get to the secondary roads,” he said.

For Baltimore residents who are homeless, Code Blue weather-related emergency shelters are available.

If they need to report a problem or request service, residents can submit a 311 service request. “If you make a 311 request, we will get back to you. But we know we’re going to be dealing with this all day and all night,” Scott said.
