Justin Trudeau’s resignation speech in full

Justin Trudeau has announced he will step down as prime minister of Canada and leader of the ruling Liberal Party after nine years in office.

He announced his resignation Monday in a speech at his Rideau Cottage residence in Ottawa, which he delivered in both English and French.

Here is his full statement in English.

Every morning I woke up as Prime Minister, I was inspired by the resilience, generosity and determination of Canadians. It is the driving force every single day that I have the privilege of serving in this position.

That’s why I’ve been fighting for this country – for you – since 2015 to strengthen and expand the middle class.

Why we gathered during the pandemic to support each other, advance reconciliation, defend free trade on this continent, and stand strong for Ukraine and our democracy.

And to combat climate risks and make our economy fit for the future. We are at a critical moment in the world.

My friends, as you all know, I am a fighter.

Every bone in my body always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians. This country is very close to my heart. And I will always be motivated by what is in the best interests of Canadians.

And the fact is that after the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history, Parliament was paralyzed for months, despite all efforts to resolve the problem.

That is why I told the Governor General this morning that we need a new session of Parliament. She granted this motion and the House will now adjourn until March 24.

Over the holidays I also had the opportunity to reflect and have long discussions with my family about our future.

I owe all the successes that I have personally achieved throughout my career to their support and encouragement.

Last night at dinner I told my children about the decision I am sharing with you today.

I intend to step down as party leader, as Prime Minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process. Last night I asked the President of the Liberal Party to begin this process.

This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and I have realized that if I have to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in this election.

The Liberal Party of Canada is an important institution in the history of our great country and our democracy. A new Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party will bring their values and ideals into the next election.

I’m excited to see how the process develops in the coming months.

We were elected for a third time in 2021 to strengthen the post-pandemic economy and advance Canada’s interests in a complicated world, and that is exactly the job I and we will continue to do for Canadians.
