ST. LOUIS – A winter storm devastated the St. Louis region throughout Sunday and into the early hours of Monday. After the snow falls, meteorologists warn that it is here to stay.

5 On Your Side Meteorologist Anthony Slaughter said the effects of the winter storm will be felt through the weekend, with “extremely cold” temperatures well below freezing expected in the area for days.

“Whatever snow or ice you deal with will freeze again, whether it’s your sidewalk or your driveway…This is the season of slips and falls,” Slaughter said. “The roads are so compacted with snow and ice that one would actually want to avoid travel until (the Missouri Department of Transportation) and (the Illinois Department of Transportation) make progress in clearing the roads.”

Meteorologist Tracy Hinson said the St. Louis area is expected to see snow on the ground over the next 10 days.

“There will be minimal melting on Sunday as temperatures rise above 32 degrees … but not nearly enough to melt everything away,” Hinson said.

For drivers who are still being called into work or forced to drive, Hinson recommended shoveling out in a larger truck or calling a friend.

“Low-profile trucks will have difficulty getting in and out because of the depth of the snow,” Hinson said.

MoDOT urged drivers to postpone travel, if possible, until roads are plowed, treated and cleared. For drivers who are forced to drive, MoDOT has posted the following recommendations on its website:

  • Slow down and adjust your speed to the conditions.
  • Give the snow plows plenty of space and do not drive past them.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Remember that driving is most dangerous when temperatures are around 32 degrees.
  • Be aware of other vehicles having problems with road conditions.
  • Keep mirrors, windows and lights clean; Leave your lights on.
  • Do not overtake other vehicles on or near bridges.
  • Keep your fuel tank at least half full.
  • If you do not feel comfortable driving, exit the highway and park in the first safe location.

MoDOT also said drivers should keep the following in their vehicles in case they get stuck:

  • A flashlight with extra batteries
  • A first aid kit
  • Necessary medications
  • Blankets and/or sleeping bags
  • Extra mittens or gloves, socks, a warm hat and rain gear
  • A small bag of sand that you can use for traction under your wheels
  • A small shovel
  • Jumper cables
  • Small tools – pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers
  • A colorful cloth that can be used as a flag
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Bottled water
