Snow and accidents cause major travel delays

CINCINNATI (WXIX) — Snow and slick conditions caused significant travel delays early Monday morning.

The outside lanes of northbound Interstate 71 were blocked near Stewart Road due to heavy snow, but have since reopened. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, all lanes of NB I-471 were closed at Liberty Street in downtown Cincinnati due to a crash.

Driving on highways in Cincinnati is “very, very difficult right now,” ODOT spokesman Matt Bruning told FOX19 NOW during a live interview at 10:45 a.m

Previously, SB I-71/75 was closed for hours on Cut-in-the-Hill because a semi-truck swerved just before 3:30 a.m

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, all vehicles were diverted off the highway onto Kyles Lane.

The highway was finally reopened around 9 a.m. after a tow truck towed the huge vehicle out and emergency crews cleaned up the scene.

Crashes also partially blocked the ramp from Red Bank Road to SB I-71 and the ramp from NB I-471 to EB US 50 at Martin Street.

Monday and Tuesday will be initial weather advisory days, with the entire Tri-State under a winter storm warning in effect until noon Tuesday due to heavy snow and ice.

After record snow fell at our regional airport on Sunday, more snow and sleet fell overnight.

According to the FOX19 NOW weather team, light scattered snow with an icy mix fell south of the Ohio River early Monday, making roads slippery and driving dangerous.

Another round of snow began just after 8 a.m. and will continue until about 2 p.m
