When will Donald Trump take office? Things to know about Inauguration Day 2025, tickets

President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House this month.

After Trump won the 2024 election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in November, his inauguration will take place in a few weeks. After Grover Cleveland, Trump is the second US president to win two non-consecutive terms.

Trump will also be the third president to take office on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The only step between Trump’s inauguration is for Harris to count the votes on January 6 along with U.S. Archivist Collen Shogan.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch the inauguration live in DC or on your screens.

What happens on January 6th?

The final step of an election is for members of Congress to count the electoral votes that were voted on and submitted to Congress in December. These votes represent all of the electoral votes in each state.

As President of the Senate and Archivist of the United States, Kamala Harris and Collen Shogan, respectively, will oversee the vote count. After attempting to overturn the 2020 election, the Electoral Count Reform Act also introduced a number of reforms for this joint session.

That includes a clarification that the vice president’s role as president of the Senate in overseeing the count is “ministerial,” and the threshold for objections to a state’s electoral rolls has been raised to one-fifth of each chamber.

When will Trump be sworn in? When is Inauguration Day?

Inauguration Day will take place on Monday, January 20th. The inauguration traditionally takes place on January 20th, following the November elections. Unless January 20th falls on a Sunday, which will move the event to January 21st.

Traditionally, Vice President-elect JD Vance will be sworn in first, and Trump will take the presidential oath around 11 a.m. CT.

Since Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January, this will be the third time a president has taken the oath of office on the holiday and the first transfer of power.

Can I purchase tickets for the inauguration?

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is offering a limited number of inaugural tickets to the public through members of Congress. Tickets are free and allow you to watch the proceedings from the U.S. Capitol.

Tickets are available from your congressman in the weeks leading up to the inauguration.
