Wind warning applies as temperatures drop

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Hello!

First warning AccuTrack shows the rain, storms have subsided and colder air is moving into central and northern Alabama.

Wind warning

A Wind warning valid until 6 p.m. Winds will be northwest at 15 to 25 miles per hour. Gusts can reach speeds of 35 to 40 miles per hour.

First warning of a bitterly cold Monday: Temperatures are expected to fall quickly behind the cold front. Wind chills will likely drop to 10 to 20 degrees this afternoon. You’ll probably want to wear several layers to stay warm from the cold temperatures and wind.

The next 24 hours

It is likely to remain mostly cloudy today and no weather-related travel issues are expected. Temperatures Monday afternoon are expected to be in the low to mid 30s, with northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph. The wind is expected to ease Monday night.

Winterize your home: Very cold air will hit central Alabama next week. We will likely see highs ranging from the upper 30s to lower 40s, with overnight lows well into the 20s. Make sure all outdoor faucets are covered and protected from the cold. You’ll probably want to open the cabinets under your sinks in your home to help circulate warm air around the pipes. You should also drain your faucets at night to prevent the pipes from freezing.

7 day forecast
7 day forecast(WBRC)

It should remain sunny and cool from Tuesday to Thursday. Our coldest morning next week will likely be Thursday, with temperatures falling into the upper teens and lower 20s with a slight chance of wind chills in the teens.

Potential for a winter threat on Friday: Long-range models continue to show a low pressure system developing along the Gulf Coast next Friday, January 10th. We are confident that we will have cold air, but there is a lot of uncertainty about the path and intensity of the low that could form.

Future radar
Future radar(WBRC)

Some of our models show a mix of freezing rain and sleet developing along and north of Interstate20 while snow develops across northern Alabama Friday afternoon and evening. The system will then move out late Friday evening, with a low chance of persistent wintry precipitation Saturday. If this system is weaker and further south, there may not be a storm at all. If it shifts too far north it could just be cold rain. We will be watching this very closely, but it is still too far into the future to determine whether we will see snow or some sort of wintry mix. If the threat of winter storms increases, we will likely issue one First alert weather day for next Friday. Stay tuned for regular updates this weekend and throughout next week. We’ll have a better handle on the setup by next Tuesday and Wednesday.
