Tennessee updates Cade Phillips’ injury status for Florida game

Tennessee basketball sophomore forward Cade Phillips will be available for Tuesday night’s game in Florida. The second-year forward was removed from the pregame injury report after initially being listed as questionable Monday night.

Phillips appeared to injure his left shoulder in the second half of Saturday’s 76-52 win over Arkansas at Food City Center. During practice on Monday morning, he wore a brace on his left shoulder and worked individually with members of the coaching staff.

The injury occurred when Phillips fielded a loose ball against the Razorbacks on Saturday. He briefly went into the tunnel next to the Tennessee bench before rejoining his teammates in the huddle during a timeout.

No. 1 Tennessee at No. 8 Florida, Tuesday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

No. 1 Tennessee (14-0, 1-0 SEC) and No. 8 Florida (13-1, 0-1) are scheduled for a 7 Eastern Time start on ESPN2 at Exactech Arena in Gainesville. The Gators listed all available players on Monday night’s injury report.

Head coach Rick Barnes said after the Arkansas game that Phillips could have played more after his injury in the second half, but the result didn’t make it necessary.

“He was available when we needed him,” Barnes said during his postgame press conference. “The situation simply didn’t require it.”

Phillips is averaging 6.5 points and 4.4 rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game this season. He played 11 minutes against Arkansas – his fewest appearances since seven minutes against Virginia in November – and finished the game with two points and six rebounds off the bench.

Several Vols are dealing with injuries

The season so far has been plagued by injuries despite Tennessee’s undefeated record of 14-0, tying it to the best start in program history.

The Vols lost the second-year power forward JP Estrella until season-ending foot surgery at the end of November. Sophomore wing Cameron Carr Required thumb surgery after injuring it against Austin Peay on November 17th, then abruptly left the program on December 23rd, electing to transfer.

Freshman guard Bishop Boswell missed the Middle Tennessee State game on Dec. 23 after injuring his shoulder on Dec. 17 against Western Carolina. He returned Dec. 31 against Norfolk State but has played just four minutes in the last two games.

Both Boswell and the transfer wing Darlinstone Dubar have each missed a game this season due to a concussion.

Senior security guard Jahmai Mashack played with two fingers taped together on his left hand after he was injured trying to play a loose ball in the first half against Middle Tennessee State.

Tennessee started the season with 11 of 13 possible scholarship players. The Vols are down to nine scholarship players after Carr’s departure and Estrella’s season-ending injury.
