Brush fire in the Santa Clara River bottom produces smoke near Santa Paula

A small brush fire that ignited early Tuesday on the bottom of the Santa Clara River near Santa Paula was contained within hours and continued to produce smoke as crews worked to fully extinguish the blaze, officials said.

Initial reports from the Ventura County Fire Department said firefighters were responding to the blaze west of the 12th Street Bridge shortly before 4:30 a.m. The so-called Clara Fire was considered contained around 7:15 a.m., the agency said on social media.

County fire officials said residents in the area may continue to notice smoke during the day.
